Disclosure: Saatva and Out of the Bex partnered on a content creation exchange. A gifted mattress and affiliate link were included as part of the collaboration. This is no way impacts the integrity of the review. All reviews are 100% honest. Always. Brands I work with are thoroughly researched and evaluated. Shopping for mattresses online is HARD. I think we underestimate that fact. Search the word “mattress” even once on google and you will be trapped in a revolving door of the same few ads from the same few companies for a solid three months—minimum. Sound familiar? After a while you start to think the only mattresses out there are those same few (think Purple, Sleep Number, and Casper). However, I would urge you to search a little deeper. If you’re willing to look beyond the same few advertisements you can find a mattress that is not only luxury quality but also affordable.

You may have noticed when you searched online for a new mattress that the first thing you are usually offered is a listing from a mattress review site. These are a great place to start, but not necessarily to finish. Mattress review sites are designed to summarize dozens of different mattresses, yet most reviewers never actually sleep on them and even fewer actually use the mattress they are reviewing on a regular basis.

Hi, I’m Bex. Yes, a real person who sleeps on a real Saatva mattress every night. It’s my actual bed, day in and day out. Nope, this is not a mattress review website. It’s not a revolving door of mattresses from different companies. It’s just me, a blogger, sharing my experience getting a Saatva mattress from start to finish and sharing my thoughts on it three months of daily use later.

Why I Switched from Memory Foam to a Hybrid Mattress

What is the one thing all of us are looking for when we buy a mattress? Support. That’s the pitch we’re given time and time again. Unfortunately, if you don’t do your research you might be disappointed by broken promises. That’s exactly what happened to my husband and I about a year and a half ago when we fell into the mattress-in-a-box trend. And boy, did I regret that decision quickly.

We purchased a Casper and less than a year of use later it had started to sag–significantly. Every night I felt like I was falling into a ditch in the middle of our bed. It forced my shoulders into an uncomfortable curve, unsettled my hips, and produced a pinched nerve in my neck on more than one occasion. We spent six weeks sleeping on the floor. It was that terrible.

These mattress-in-a-box beds are trendy right now, but rarely does a trend last the test of time and we’re seeing that now. We spent upwards of $800 on that mattress. It was a complete waste of money. I wish I had done my research the first time around, but the lesson has been learned. That’s why this time I spent weeks researching mattresses and quality versus affordability.

I would rather pay once for something truly incredible and not waste hard-earned cash every couple of years on something that may be trendy, but just doesn’t last. I’m over the mattress-in-a-box memory foam trend. They don’t have the structure to support your body, or even last more than a few years, and it felt like a huge waste of money by the end.

I was determined to find an affordable, worthwhile mattress this time around. I’m teaching myself to be of the philosophy that spends money with intention so that I really know what i’m paying for and what I’ll get out of it. After weeks of research, I found everything I was looking for in Saatva.

How I Found Out About Saatva

I had a few search parameters when looking for a mattress online. I wanted:

  • a durable bed that would stand up over time
  • quality material, eco-friendly if possible
  • a hybrid innersping mattress with coils for lasting support
  • a firm comfort level
  • ability to sleep in any position
  • a cool sleeping experience

I entered search term like “best hybrid mattress” and “best firm mattresses.” If you do the same you’ll notice several mattress companies pop up, most of them ads. But I was looking for more than that. I started with mattress review sites and dove deeper from there. It wasn’t long before I realized Saatva was near the top of the list on these sites and I wanted to find out more.

What’s Good About a Saatva Mattress?

In my Luxury Firm Saatva Mattress I’ve found:

  • The perfect balance between soft and firm
  • You can sleep in any position: back, side, or stomach
  • dual coil system made of durable materials
  • low motion transfer
  • incredibly strong edge support, so you can use the whole mattress
  • sleeps cool
  • added support in the lumbar region for a happier, healthier spine
  • made in the USA

But more than just a list of great features, here’s what else has happened for me personally:

  • my neck and shoulder pain is gone
  • I feel good when I wake up in the morning
  • I fall sleep faster

Why I Chose Saatva

Long Lasting Comfort

The comfort level I chose from Saatva is Luxury Firm. This means it has a fully supportive coil base that will keep your spine and joints happy. However, it is also topped with a plush euro fill akin to sleeping on a cloud. This versatility allows you to sleep in any position you want: side, stomach, back–whatever. Great for couples with different sleep needs. It’s the firmness your body needs with the comfort your restful mind craves.

Pain Relief & Spine Support

Have you ever had lower back pain? It has been a constant struggle for me. I have a slightly curved lower back and I carry most of my weight in my hips. This means sometimes sleeping on a bad mattress can cause a gap between my body and the bed. That combination doesn’t make you feel too great the next morning! I wanted a mattress with fantastic lumbar support. When I saw the extent to which Saatva offered this it completely sold me. The middle of the Saatva mattress, around the lower back and hip area, is enhanced for better balance and lumbar support. You can actually see the difference in each section from the top of the mattress, though the support starts much deeper than the surface with a coil on coil support system.

Durability

I wanted a mattress that lasts. Buying a bed is a significant purchase. I want to do this the right way the first time and not make the same mistake I did when I bought a mattress-in-a-box. I’m going for quality. Saatva mattresses are designed to last consistently for 10-15 years. One look at the materials section of their website will have you convinced.

What Is Sleeping on a Saatva Mattress like?

Saatva offers three comfort levels in their mattresses: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, & Firm. I wanted a firm mattress, something that would fully support my spine and joints and hold up better over time. However, I also wanted a mattress that I could sleep on in any position whether it was on my side, back, or stomach. After all, my intention was this mattress was to make a purchase that would last me a decade. A decade leaves room for a lot of life changes. I knew I didn’t want the Plush Soft because I wasn’t looking for a soft mattress. The decision fell between the Saatva Luxury Firm or Firm. Firm is great if you only sleep on your back or on your stomach, but I tend to sleep in every position. Also, I have a heavier hip area which causes a curve in my lower back when lying flat. I knew I needed extra support in that area and I worried a Firm comfort level would leave a gap. So, I chose the Luxury Firm comfort level and I couldn’t have made a better decision.

So, what does the Saatva Luxury Firm feel like?

The Luxury Firm has a solid, firm base that supports your spine. However, the euro fill pillow top makes for a perfect combination of strength and comfort. You will sink in to layers of comfort, but you only sink so far. For me, this was of the upmost importance. I didn’t want to feel like i was falling into my mattress, I wanted to feel cradled by it. That’s exactly what I found with Saatva. Every joint feels soothed and perfectly cradled whether it’s the curve in my lower back, the top of my shoulders, or my knees and hips when I lay on my side. It is a firm mattress but with plush, soft top layer for comfort.

Is the Luxury Firm too hard? Or too soft?

If you know that you enjoy a truly firm mattress, then consider the Saatva Firm instead of the Luxury Firm. However, if you know you want a firm mattress, but don’t want to feel like you’re sleeping on a board, go with the Luxury Firm. I was worried it would be too firm, even though that’s what I knew I wanted. It ended up being even better that I expected. The top euro fill layer feels truly luxurious and is the perfect balance between firm and soft.

What to Expect from Order to Delivery

Ordering

Saatva offers a 120-day home trial, plus free white glove home delivery with set up and mattress removal. When you go through the Saatva order page you will first be asked to choose your comfort level (I chose Luxury Firm). Then you choose your size (Saatva is available in all sizes from Twin to California King) and your mattress height. Height offerings are either 11.5 or 14.5. There is no difference in structure or price between the two. This decision is purely aesthetic. If you like a taller mattress, choose the 14.5. If you prefer the standard height, choose 11.5. I chose the 11.5 so I could still fit standard sized sheets. You also have the option to add a foundation.

My Exact Saatva Order:
Luxury Firm
Queen 11’5″
+ 8.75″ Foundation

If you want the free mattress removal, make sure to check that box on the order page.

Shipping

Saatva has a comparatively fast shipping time, arriving at your door anywhere from 5-12 days after your purchase. You will receive an order confirmation email as a message from customer support giving you the total height of your mattress and foundation and asking you to confirm the order information is correct for production. I really appreciated this extra check. It made me feel complete confidence in the Saatva team to ensure my order was right. You will also get an email when your mattress is out of production and then a phone call to set up delivery.

Delivery & Set Up

The Saatva delivery team will give you a call to schedule your delivery. You are given a time estimate and four hour window. On the day of my delivery, the team actually called to tell me when they were 15 minutes away. I really appreciated this extra bit of courtesy. The delivery team was prompt, fast, and very kind.

I had a small chat with the head of the team and he told me two things that made me even more excited to have a Saatva. First, he told me all of the delivery team slept on Saatva mattresses in their own home. Second, he told me they deliver Saatva mattresses all day, every day. I felt even more confident in my decision knowing that they are such a popular mattress they have their own delivery team and that the team itself has so much confidence in these beds they actually use them themselves.

Set up took no more than fifteen minutes. They arrived within the first hour of the delivery window.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Are Saatva Mattresses Any Good?

In my opinion, absolutely yes. I have loved the switch to Saatva and highly recommend it for a great luxury mattress at an affordable price.

Is Saatva Mattress Good For Back Pain?

Before I got a Saatva mattress I was sleeping on a trendy memory foam bed-in-a-box mattress that caused me a great deal of neck and back pain with repeated pinched nerves. I even slept on a camp pad on my floor for two months because the memory foam was that bad! Those types of beds just don’t have the support my spine needs. Shouldn’t a mattress be the place you go at the end of the day to feel better? Not the place you dread laying down in because you know you’ll wake up in more pain? Yeah. I thought so too.

Since sleeping on a Saatva Luxury Firm I haven’t had any back pain. When I slouch at my desk all day and I can feel some tension starting in my neck and shoulders, I actually look forward to going to bed. It’s like it cradles ever nook and cranny while still having a solid, firm base that straightens out and supports my back, hips, and shoulders. It keeps my joints healthy and happy and acts as it should, like a reset button at the end of the day so I can start fresh again tomorrow.

Is Saatva Mattress Hot?

No. Saatva Luxury Firm Mattress does not sleep hot. The Saatva has a dual coil structure it allows for airflow. You can read about this feature in detail on their website here. I haven’t had any problems with sweating or overheating while sleeping on a Saatva mattress. Sure, I wake up warm and toasty (we sleep under a goosedown), but I have yet to feel that overwhelming cycle of trapped, sticky heat you sometimes experience on a memory foam mattress, which has nothing built in to let air and moisture escape. Saatva has been a cool sleep experience for my husband and I both.

Which Saatva Mattress Comfort Level is Best?

It depends on what your needs are. I chose the Luxury Firm because I wanted strong, durable support in the base of the mattress, but I also wanted the ability to sleep in any position and be cradled by a soothing top layer. In my opinion, the Luxury Firm is the best of both worlds.

Tips for Buying a Mattress Online

Consider your weight vs. the comfort level

While I was researching mattress reviews across many different brands I noticed something. Most of the mattress reviews had something in common. Usually, when someone had a complaint about the mattress it was because they bought it without doing their research. If you want a soft mattress, buy a soft mattress. Don’t be upset if you buy a firm mattress and then expect it to be soft. That sounds silly. Common sense, right? I was surprised by how many reviews sounded exactly like that. This tip should help solve that issue.

If you are a heavier person then you will need a stronger support system in your mattress. On the other hand, if you are a lighter person you will likely not need as much support since you will sit more on top of the mattress rather than sinking into it. Make sense? When shopping for mattresses online consider your weight and the comfort level you want versus the mattress you’re considering.

This is another reason I love the Luxury Firm mattress from Saatva, because it has a firm base but with a soft pillow top. It’s the best of both worlds.

Check the Comments Section on Brand Social Media

It’s hard to go off of reviews alone, especially when it comes to mattresses. One additional step I took was to check the comments section of brand social media. Does the brand respond to comments? What do the comments say? Good or bad? I’ve heard tell that some companies pay people to leave false negative review comments on competitor social media. If you see negative comments that seem a bit unfounded, check their replies. Sometimes real customers come to the brand’s defense. If real customers are defending the product, that must mean they really really love it. And maybe you will too.

Pay Attention to How Long the Company Has Been in Place

Because shopping for mattresses online is the trend, you’ll see a lot of different brands of varying quality pop up in search. Don’t get jipped by a new company without a track record. See how long the company has been in place. If it’s a year or less then you really can’t count on reviews because the beds haven’t been in consumer’s  homes long enough to make a fair comment on durability and lasting comfort. Saatva, for example, has been in business since 2011. That’s plenty of years for lasting reviews and lasting impacts.

What to do now?

I hope this extensive Saatva mattress review has helped you as you search for your next mattress.
