Illuminae: by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – an honest book review

Another reason for me to fear the future. Space & AI in Illuminae – A Book Review

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded. The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit. But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it’s clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again. Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes. – Description from Amazon –

It’s no secret that I’m afraid of outer space, robots, AI, or the terrifying tech filled future. This book is printed proof of that fear… but in the funnest way possible.

I read this 608 page book in 2 days. I was addicted. You will be too.

Are we reaching a time in bookish history when traditional formats are being tested? I think so! It seems every time I go into a book store I see some new book with a unique layout and this read is definitely a trend setter for that market. I have to admit, it brings back the nostalgia of reading a psychical book in a world of e-readers. I enjoyed the formatting immensely. If you are going to read this book, read it in physical form. It should be appreciated for the piece of art that it is and the best way to do that is in original bookish form.

I love reading books that feel like an action movie playing in my head.

I was very much invested in this story, in Kady especially, who I am never traveling to space without. I mean, I read it in 2 days. What does that tell you?

There is a twist you won’t see coming. And then another one after that. Then just for kicks, there might be one more.

If you want to go on an action-packed space odyssey with one bad ass leading lady, questionable AI, a plague, and an entirely unique reading experience, click on that cover cause this is for you, space traveler.
