10 Inspirational Books to Reset Your Life
tag: 10 Inspirational Books to Reset Your Life
There are moments in every person’s life when you feel the need for a reset button. I imagine it big and red, with a small plaque that reads “For Emergencies Only.”
It would be sheltered in a slim see-through box with a latch and key. You could press it whenever life started to feel tired, or small, or overwhelming. When work sucks, the world always seems to look a depressing shade of gray, and even coffee isn’t doing it for you anymore.
I’ve asked the world’s top scientists to work on this, but while they’re at it we will just have to make do with books! Frankly, they’re not such a bad thing with which to make do. In fact, a few of these books completely changed my life.
No book has had a greater impact on me than Night by Elie Wiesel. The words cradled within that slim little memoir set in motion a series of events that not only redirected my entire existence, but also that of my childhood community… but that’s a story for another day.
Additionally, Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed is a book that made me feel so devastatingly human, so entirely one with my fellow man, that I found myself crying, laughing, and crying again at the sheer honesty of it all.
If you’re not ready to loose yourself in a pile of tissues, there are some tamer books to be found below. Books that offer optimism, laughter, and new perspectives.
Something Like Happy by Eva Woods had me laughing over 3-thousand miles of open road as the audiobook narrator filled every recess of my car with posh accents and perfect British humor. Star Girl by Jerry Spinelli taught me from a young age to boldly embrace the weirdness that is me, to covet it, to become a Star Girl. The Help reminded me of the power of friendship and bravery. The Alchemist and the Life of Pi bade me to believe in the unimaginable. Ghost Boy, a memoir, gave me the open experience of a live entirely separate from my own.
Go ahead, choose your reset button.
I hope this list brings you a good book at the exact moment when you need it most.
I’ll keep you posted on that reset button… the scientists should be getting back to me any day now.
